Exploring Flow with Andrew Grifol
Have you ever been so focused on something that time flew by?
That nothing else mattered…By definition flow is a steady continuous stream. One movement after another without coming to a complete stop.
There’s a reason why Flow is becoming more popular around the world, it’s due to the feeling that nothing else matters while doing so. It’s a feeling where 30 minutes feels like 5.

Flow is a complete state of immersion.
As explained by Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, flow is “time flying, ego falling, and every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one.” If you think about it, this can be related to playing jazz. Not that I play it, but you get the point!
Now you ask how? How does your brain just disappear in time? Sounds a little crazy dude! Trust me I know, but there is science behind it. Ever heard of laser focus? Well, it exists!
It comes down to neurobiology.
Flow is the product of profound change in standard brain function, your brain moves waves from fast moving beta waves of being fully conscious, down to slower moving waves called alpha and theta.
Alpha is associated with daydreaming, while theta is associated during REM. The next thing your brain uses to connect to the state of flow is caused by “Transient Hypofrontality” which is when the (PFC) Pre-Frontal Cortex shuts down to enter flow.
Our higher cognitive function comes from the PFC so think of it as not only training your body, but also training your brain. One thing I’ve come to notice through my clients, is their appreciation of creativity that has spiked through the roof.
Flow releases large amounts of endorphins, dopamine, serotonin and more which enhances performance, pleasure and creativity.
Your whole being is involved and you’re using your skills to the upmost to perform the task at hand.
With more more athletes trying Flow, you will soon see it to develop in local gyms. Some, not all, care about the science or details behind flow, but just enjoy for other reasons like it’s different.
Every NFL, NBA, MLB player has seen and been through all types of strength and conditioning programs but really enjoy flow because it breaks the monotony, but best of all it’s fun!

The challenge of remembering a sequence of movements is what attracts them.
It brings out their competitive side, the competitiveness against their own memory and focus. Take the feeling they crave and go searching for an environment they’re not used to feeling that and now you’ve changed the game.
